I don't see a catagory for this question so I'm posting under "general". I would like to remove the fuel tank from my '68 so that I can get it cleaned out.  Car has been in storage with little fuel for 20+ years. Tank seems to be in great shape with no leaks but I'm not sure what the inside looks like.
I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has done this along with any pitfalls I can avoid.

Start by soaking the strap bolts with some good penatrating fluid(like PB Blaster) for a couple days. Unhook the sender wire and gas line from the sending unit. You'll need to take out the three screws that hold the gas cap and filler neck to the quarter panel.Support the tank with a floor jack and a piece of plywood. If there is little fuel in the tank as you say, it won't be bad, but if there is a 1/4 tank or more, you need to drain the gas out. The tank will be heavy, and when the tank lowers and you pull the filler neck out, gas could spill.Unbolt the straps, and lower the tank. When you get the tank lowered, you'll need to pull the filler neck out of the tank. Then you can drop the tank all the way out. I've done this with the car on the ground, but you may want to properly support the back of the car on stands for extra room.
Good luck.
