3rd Gen suspension upgrades?

I apologize if this has been covered but didn't see it while searching....

I have a '74 with stock suspension.  I am wondering if anyone has had luck with upgrading their 3rd gen suspension with faster cornering (vs drag racing) in mind?  Obviously, I don't expect to be taking it to autoX events but I have a lot of rural, winding roads in my area that I wish I could enjoy with more confidence and speed. 

I don't have an unlimited budget for a full pro-mod, looking for some kind of solution in the $2-5k range or so.

Order I'd recommend:
Frame connectors  or other chassis stiffening
Step up sway bar size
Significantly step up shock control
Increase t-bar or spring rates if more control is desired
