Paint Grinding Discs?

I'm removing about 10 layers of paint off my current project the old-timers way with 80-grit sandpaper on a DA. Besides taking forever, I'm going through a ton of discs. I see these small grinding discs used on some of the car shows on TV and see products like Carborundum discs in the Summit catalogs.

I'm looking for input on something quicker and more effective than what I'm doing. What are you guys using?

(I'm not going to have the car blasted).

why not start with a paint remover for the first layers, then finish with grinding disc ?

I used Harbor Freight's 7" sander/buffer with their 80 grit disks. Easy to control and really peels the paint way. Small bucket/backpack sandblaster for tight spots.

Mike, Have you tried a razor blade scraper...amazing how much paint you can remove..might try a little heat as you are scraping...especially if your dealing with 10 layers.

I have scraped off paint jobs before that were Maaco specials and it worked pretty good      The paint is so darn thick but I'll give it a try.

Be real careful with the sanding discs. If you linger too long in one spot, it will heat up and possibly warp the metal.
