The other day while looking through a pile of old papers for car stuff I found the CERTICARD from the very first Charger I ever bought
Back in the summer of 1982 when I was 17 I bought my first Charger
I had always liked the older and different cars and always reading the paper or Autotrader looking for something neat
In the local paper there was an ad for a 1968 Dodge Charger the next town over from ours
I remember trying to get my dad to call about it for me and he said if I wanted it I had to call myself
I was never on the phone much back then so did not have very much phone skills for this kind of stuff
But I called anyways
And went to see it and bought it a 1968 Dodge Charger
Well what a lesson that turned out to be
It ended up being a rusty pile of crap ( even back then )
Rear frame was bad and the torsion bar cross member was coming apart
All the things I did not know yet what to look for
Think I paid $800 for it
Had a pile of motor parts that was a 440 all torn apart
The hood was a bent at the front but the grill was fine
I asked what happened
Well they had the 440 in the car with the hood just latched down at the front but no hood hinges ( inner fenders soft in that spot)
Took it for a spin and the latch let go and the hood went up and over the car with out hitting the windshield and landed on the ground behind the car on the front edge and bent it
A year later I bought another 68 Charger with a running 318 in it for $700 and used the best parts from the two to get my first Charger on the road  :2thumbs:

I still have the paper ownership card for this car also and was looking at it about a year ago
Never knew how to decode the numbers back then but now I could
I came to find out my first Charger started out life as a slant 6 car

The red tape on the card reads
Top line 5.23.68
Next red line Cobourg Ont.   7/2/71
Next red line Keith Brown Chrysler  ( the letter S in Chrysler is almost above the tape and you can see part of a letter R under it almost off the tape)
Bottom red line 5638  5529

From reading about these cards I thought it was the first owners name that got on these cards

Does this mean the dealership could not sell the car that they got in May 23 1968 and had to take ownership of it July 2 1971 ?

Anybody know what the row of stamped numbers are for under the VIN part ?

Hmm
I just dug out the original paper ownership and confirmed it had the same vin as the Certicard and yes it does
One thing I would have done before buying the car would be to check to see if dash vin matched the paper vin and it did

The car that I dragged home was blue
Maybe a typo some where ?

The car still had the windshield in it so I can not see anyone taking it all apart and putting it back together to swap ownerships ?
I did not see any yellow on that car as it would have really stood out
