Sure Grip Swap

I've got three rear end center sections that I'm trying to combine into one 'good' one.

1) 741 case with good clutch type suregrip unit, 2.93 gears, no yoke
2) 489 case with open carrier, 2.76 gear, stock yoke
3) 489 case with open carrier, 3.23 gear, no yoke

What I want to do is take the suregrip unit from the 741 case and swap it into the 489 case with the 3.23 gear. I've actually never swapped gears/set gears up so what should I be looking out for swapping the SG unit into the 3.23 case? The 489 cases have the crush sleeve on the pinion so seeing how someone already pulled the yoke from the 3.23 case do I need to reset the backlash when I torque in a new yoke? Any other tricks/pitfalls to be aware of? Thanks!

The Sure-Grip with its bearings/races is a straight swap to any 8 3/4" case; swap the ring gear onto the SG and, yes, you'll have to reset the backlash. The FSM shows the procedure. Ditto for the yoke, the FSM details setting the pinion preload.

Be aware that there are two different yoke splines for the pinions, 10 and 29, so the yoke you want to use might not fit the pinion in the 3.23 unit.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
