Triangle fender backing plate

Does the triangle shaped metal on the bottom of the fender near the cab serve a purpose?   It looks like it might reinforce the antenna but the other side has it too.  I'm guessing to help hold the shape of the fender?  Well as you can see mine is a little rusty and not sure what to do to make them look better.  I know they really don't get seen  and the rest of the fender is in pretty good shape.  Any ideas?

I'm going to guess that yours is really rusty.  Here's a pic of the pass side on mine before installation.  I punched the antenna hole later.  I think it's on both sides.

Nope, came installed on the fender from AMD.
