Speedometer cable clean and Lube - Added question :Is there a Seal?

How do you clean and what to use as a speedometer cable lube.  I was told not to use a graphite lube.  I don't know it that is correct.

Is there a seal where you screw the speedometer cable into the 727 transmission?

I use WD40 as a cleaner in a lot of situations. Then motor oil as a lube. Others may have better ideas.
