My friends 727 shifts find when cold, but won't go into 3rd when hot.  What's going on?

Does it stay in 2nd or slip in 3rd? How is reverse? Probably seal leaking and gets worse when hot, assuming its staying in 2nd.

Probably front clutch seals or sealing rings, they hold pressure when the fluid is cold and thicker but leak pressure when the fluid heats up and thins out.

If hardened/shrunk rubber clutch seals are the problem, some "miracle in a bottle" like Trans-X or Lucas will often help.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I passed this information on to him.  He said it was trying to go into 3rd and didn't know about reverse.  This is a true 440 69 Dart and advised him he should just have it gone thru.  Thank you Joe and John for your time.  I always enjoy reading your posts.     Dave

Often, when leaking seals are reducing pressure, lifting the throttle will allow it to shift to third. It takes more pressure to engage the clutch than it does to keep it engaged.

No updates Joe.  As far as I know he hasn't done anything yet.  I will do a follow up when I know something.
