What happens to a 5.7 Hemi with 3 extra quarts of oil

My son Josh called last night saying he was having issues with his 2016 Dodge Ram.. The truck barely starts and when it does, bucks like a rodeo bull and smokes so much that it set off the smoke alarms at the dealerships work bay. The dealership says he had too much oil in the truck.. What? First, he did have the oil changed about 1000 miles previous to that, so why didn't it have issues right after that. The dealer fixed it, he picked it up the next day and as it came around the service bay corner, it was doing the exact same thing... WTH !!!!???? They charged him $1200 because they said it was his fault... If the oil change place did indeed fill it up too much, it should have given him problems right off the bat.. The vehicle is still under warranty.. Told him to contact a regional Dodge rep., get the truck fixed and get his money back.. It is in Franklin, Tn..

Frankly, I don't think there was ever 3 quarts of extra oil in the crankcase.. But, IF there was, what would be the negative impact?

Cheers and thanks.

sounds like it is dumping fuel into the oil, stuck open injector ect ect, smell the oil for gas.

Please post a copy of the invoice as a dealership oilchange cant be more the 100 bucks if its synthetic. So that leaves 1100 dollars in diagnostic charges.... lawyer time.

Being over full CAN seriously damage an engine...but that said I've only seen it happen once and even then I was not 100% convinced if was the complete cause. What happens is if the oil is deep enough the the bottom half of the crank is submerged or higher, the crank webs beat the oil into a foam....then the oil pickup pulls foam and air up with the oil and the top and gets damaged as a result of oil starvation. So on a modern engine that's cam lobes, can bearings, followers etc.

What cdr and Joe said.  Sounds like he got way overcharged.

Did I misread or did they charge him $1200 and the truck still has the same symptoms?

Yup, charged 1200 for an oil change and was unable to deliver the truck without it still driving the same.
