Anyone thinking of going with one of the new Mopar crate engines?

Its tempting, esp. now that theres a mopar kit to deal w/ the electronics....but its still at least a $10K project before you even get into the rest of the drive train, suspension and brake upgrades that may be needed, and labor (unless youre a DIYer).

I agree. I am really contemplating doing this. I have a 69 superbee I want to build and I'd like to make it easy to operate cause my wife will be the driver. But I think efi might be cheaper.

I agree. I am really contemplating doing this. I have a 69 superbee I want to build and I'd like to make it easy to operate cause my wife will be the driver. But I think efi might be cheaper.

I wonder how much you could pull out of a 5.7 salvage vehicle. I see them pop up for $3-$4k with complete running gear and no front end damage with under 60k from time to time.

You would want an ECU and TCU depending on your plans but I wonder...

An engine from a junker can save a bunch of cash. I have 289,000 miles on a 5.7 in my 2007 Ram and it still runs great. Late model piston rings seal great. The newer engines don't leak oil like old engines do. They run cleaner, last longer and get great mileage.  They lack to soul of a 440 but hey....

I could be wrong but some of the wiring kits will only work with newer (15-up) engines.  Obviously the 03-14 engines can be made to work, but its a production.

I bought everything new and it totaled around $13,000 using my existing 727 trans (converted to a manual valve body).  I have since swapped to a Passon 4 spd OD, so add another $7,000 for Jamie's complete kit.  The manual trans really changed the car, almost as if the 392 was made for a manual not an auto.  I've also added Dr. Gas Boom Tube side exhaust.

I ran it on a dyno with the 727 and it was 365 hp and 400 tq at the wheels.  The manual will add some to those numbers.
