How does a person get welded areas smoothed out in the hard to reach places?  I have a regular 4" grinder, a 90 degree air grinder and cant seem to figure this one out.  I am trying to grind some welds down in left side trunk rails.  Is there a better way?

You might have better success with a die grinder.  There are a variety of cutting bits available and the grinders usually are not very large so getting into smaller spaces will be easier.

A mini grinder would be a Dremel.

That is possible, Lennard.
I do remember though that until about 20 years ago, the most common grinder people used was a 7"  angled unit. The 4 and 4 1/2" grinder became popular in the early 90s so maybe the OP is referring to that as a "mini" grinder?  :shruggy:

You can get deburring bits for use in a drill. There are special stones and bits for the dremel tools too.

I use a die grinder with a cutoff wheel and gently and precisely skim over the weld until it is flat.  when the wheel is ground down halfway at some point you can access areas you cant with a full new cutoff wheel.  I do use some deburring bits also that have a small round  head ,theirs many different shapes of these .   I do this stuff on a daily basis when the body side just can't finish out their welds as nice as I like in the door jamb and rocker panel area also many other tight spots.   just throw some welds out on a couple practice pieces of metal and wear some goggles .  with practice its amazing how good you can get with it.

Thanks for all the ideas.   I will have to stop by the store for some die grinding equipment.

I use a die grinder to get into the hard to reach areas and corners. I also spray a little WD-40 as I go to help with the cutting...

Yes, Brian.  That was my question.  :)   I always ask the expert first then go to the forum.  I really respect your opinion as do many others.  Do you have additional input?

I think they covered just fine.
