I have a 1970 dodge charger and it will start up great the first time, but once I turn it off the car will barely crank. Initially I thought this meant the alternator/battery was bad, but if I wait until the engine cools down it starts up great again. Any input is great.

Heat soak is certainly a possibility. It will be worse if the starter is old or has been improperly rebuilt. A newer mini starter from the early 90s to 2002 is a stronger, lighter and more reliable unit. The V6 versions are even strong enough to spin an old 440.

Timing too advanced. Corroded battery cables.
