A little in over my head.

So I pulled the engine to replace freeze plugs. Now the engine is back in but it won't start. I'm pretty sure I just have the firing order wrong on account of the loud backfire. However I have killed 3 batteries, probably a bad ground somewhere. If anyone is near Madera, CA please let me know I could use some help.

Did you remove the distributor? Could be off 180 degrees.

John_Kunkel

Remove the #1 spark plug, put your thumb over the hole and turn the motor over until you feel compression, continue turning until the timing mark on the damper is on zero, then remove the distributor cap and check the position of the rotor...it should be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire in the cap.

Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, clockwise for SB's and counterclockwise for BB's.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Reel R/T

I did not remove the distributor. I will try with my thumb and let you guys know how it went. Thank you all for the help.

If you didn't remove the distributor... did you remove plug wires? or such? Otherwise you have no ground to the engine or power to the coil.  :scratchchin:

More details needed here.

If engine was removed, I'm guessing that everything was removed that attaches to it? Wiring? Coil? Ballast resistor?
Guessing again....Is this a 440?
Does the engine spin using the key?
Is it getting fuel?
Do you have fuel?
Did water get into the distributor?

Reel R/T

Nothing was taken off except the alternator. It is a 440. It wants to turn over when I turn the key. It's getting fuel. When I have time off I'm going to double check the firing order.

Kern Dog

Remember that the firing order on the distributor cap goes COUNTERclockwise on a big block.

Figure it out? I go past Madera on the way to and from work every week. If it ran before I can make it run again.

I haven't had any time off to work on her. I could always use a hand though.

NitroNeal

I'll be coming by this coming Sunday.

Reel R/T

That's perfect. I have this Sunday off.
