When a block has been zero decked does it take the factory spark plugs? Wasn't sure sense the pistons are now closer to the spark plugs if the stock plugs inside height be the same ?kinda of a stupid question

As far as the reach of the plug goes the answer is - yes, same plug. The increase in compression can demand a lower heat range though.
No stupid questions - only stupid answers.

Can putting in a cooler plug help stop pinging ?  I have a 9.7 comp 440 and when the motor is hot it will ping but cool it is fine.   sorry about the hijacking...

Too general of a question with the given info.
-Short answer is yes and no depending on what is actually causing the ping.

-long answer needs more answers to a few questions.
What temperature is "hot"?
Aluminum or steel heads,
is the 9.7:1 verified,
what part number cam is in it,
What plugs are in it
What is the current initial/total timing and what curve used. Vacuum advance in use or capped.
what rpm and load condition does it ping at, ie wide open from idle to 6k or low rpm load only etc.

What I do know, in 90+ degree temp. with 160 degree stat.    Temp 190 and up (runs hot)  will go to 220 in traffic, 906 heads .. 9.7 verified by shop that built it. Comp cams 286 lift (I think) plugs not sure, Vacuum capped, 12-15 degrees. Not sure if balancer  has slid.   Pretty much load only. When hot  just tap the throttle and any pulling like a hill or out into traffic. can't tell at higher rpm because of noise. I have set the timing back so it doesn't ping but that pushes the temp. up.  Son has it now and he is 700 miles from me but I keep an eye on it.

What is the total timing at?  Do you have the cam card for the cam? Need the ivc number to determine your dynamic compression but that engine shouldnt ping unless its at mountain elevation given fuel system is adequate and its not running lean at the post 200 temps. 93 octane i assume as well?

Also, the amount of oil in the combustion chamber as noted in your other post will definatly cause detonation.

two different engines here, my sons has about 500 miles now and doesn't have an oil problem just hot and pinging.  He has the paperwork on the motor with him so I don't have an answer on the cam right now but i can get it.

Ah ok, good to know. Total timing and the cam card will help diag this one further.

Mines zero deck, aluminum edelbrock heads 84cc,Lunatiti voodoo cam 10230704 dur 513/533 speed pro pistons 10-1 compression ratio. 900 cfm holllwy double pum

heyoldguy

In your case zero decking the block will not cause the spark plugs to hit. Not sure what you mean by factory plugs. The factory spark plugs used in the factory iron heads won't work in the RPM heads. If you use the Edelbrock recommended RC-12YC or equivalent you should be fine.
