I was thinking about painting the door jams on my 1968 Charger while I still look for someone to do the exterior body and paint.

The existing original paint appears to be in fairly good condition, just a little dull.
Can I just clean, sand it lightly, and final paint without putting a layer of primer on first?

If you break thru to bare steel you will need to spray sealer. Shouldn't need to prime and sand, but simply a sealer which you just spray wait half hour or so do dry and then go right to painting.

Make sure you clean and scuff(sand) it very thoroughly or it will peel.

I would use epoxy primer after you prep area well with 320 grit and degrease with wax and grease remover.
