Anyone used a propane torch to clean fouled plugs? My friend mentioned it the other day.  :shruggy:

myk

Man if they're that bad I'd just replace them...

Used to do it quite often with the 2 stroke engine plugs, it works but they're not quite "good as new."  Still do it when I'm in a pinch and don't have the right plug for the weedeater.

yes a torch &   have taken plugs  in the kitchen &  put them on the cooker gas ring  :yesnod:  when either a car is flooded & or  just cleaning up dirty plugs , after washing them in fresh gas or lacquer  thinner  :yesnod:

side note , have read or heard , cant remember where  ,  don't / never use a wire brush to clean plugs  :shruggy:

I had all the plugs out of my 383 before the motor went in my car

Plugs were a little gummy so I cleaned them all on the wire wheel and everything still runs fine  ;)

:scratchchin: We were talking about carb tuning and getting them fresh for a round of adjustments and readings.

When a plug completely fouls out the carbon builds up to the point that the spark travels through it rather than jumping across the gap.  The insulator is ceramic, when you wire brush the ceramic metal from the bristles builds up on it.  After you wire brush the plug and the insulator looks shiny and silver you've partially fouled the plug already.

I use carb cleaner and a toothbrush to get the heavy stuff off, then torch it to bake off the rest.
