I do agree.
When you take it to a 20" wheel size, the width starts to look narrower even if running a 285 series tire. A smaller diameter wheel allows a wide tire to look more meaty. I am aware that I may seem to contradict a bit, but...
The 18" size I chose for my car allowed some high tech, sticky rubber that still rides quite well. The wifes 2015 Challenger feels about the same with the STP option . Shorter sidewalls than mine probably start getting to the point of too little flex, causing skids with far less warning that they are coming.
The way that I see it, the flex in the sidewall allows a degree of cushion that has both benefits and drawbacks. The limits of grip are usually lower than is the case with a shorter sidewall, but you can usually creep up on those limits and feel when you are close to exceeding them. Shorter sidewalls allow faster steering response and sometimes better grip. the higher limits that they allow do come at a price. They grip and grip, then often just break loose with less warning.
I guess that is just motivation to become a better driver, huh?
