Hey all. Id like to start on finding the history of my 73 charger. I have no idea the process of doing this at the dmv, i figure ill have to bring the title and the registration to prove its my car? Before i take half a day off from work i thought id try my luck here and be prepared. Anyone from mass know what the deal is? Thanks.

Might want to call first and see if they'll even do anything for you before you waste a trip.  It WILL require a trip with your documentation, if they're willing to do a search for you.  In Georgia, anything before 1986 is not required to be titled.  However, if it's ever been registered in the state, the VIN will pull up in the Georgia titling and registration database.  However, vehicle ownership is a confidential record in the State of Georgia, so that information wouldn't be released to anyone other than law enforcement or an attorney with a subpoena.  If you have a cop friend, that might be the route to go.

i live in Mass.

The DMV will give you a copy of the title if you ask. don't remember if there was a charge for it.

i had the original title and was trying to get it back after i had turned it in when i bought the car. they would only give me a copy.

Thanks for the info, basically id just like to see where the car has been and how many owners its had, unfortunatly the po didnt really give me much info when i bought it. Ive contacted him a few times but hes a "celebrity" i dont think he wants to be bothered about it.

Most states do not want to deal with title histories. Some do not want to waste the money converting the old paper files to digital. Some do not want to deal with any of it at all. Indiana used to offer it as they saved everything on microfiche. Now they do not want deal with it at all. Even charging $30 a vehicle wasn't covering the expenses.

States like Maine never saved anything beyond 8 years. I am unsure of Massachusetts policy, but I doubt they will offer much of what you are looking for.
