Tranny Dipstick tube leak

I just got my car all put (mostly) back together. Took it out for maiden voyage and felt pretty good about it.

Until later when I went out to the garage and found tranny fluid all over the floor.  Leak is from dipstick tube.

Is there an aftermarket tube that seals better?  Not a matching correct restoration type car, I just need something that will work. Or a trick?

If I pull the tube how much fluid could I expect to spill out of a standard pan?

Thanks!

Did you replace the O-ring on your dipstick tube ?

Mancini Racing carries an aftermarket tube with an improved seal design :

I didn't replace it as it seemed to fit pretty snug. I'll pull it and check it out.

Maybe if I jack up the right front of the car I can minimize fluid spillage when I pull it

Thanks for the link !

I thought I had a dipstick leak, turned out to be the shifter seal, both are easy to replace.

I thought I had a leak in my transmission dipstick tube also

Turned out that the tube had a crack in it just above where it went into the casting

The tube O ring does an adequate job of sealing, especially with a smear of RTV but no seals will stop a cracked tube (fairly common) from leaking.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the info- I will check out the tube for cracks.

I put a repro tube on my sons 727 and it leaked like mad. Turned out the bracket that bolts to the motor was welded in the wrong place so it was holding the tube at a severe angle to the point I removed it and rewelded it in the right position  so the tube centered itself when it was bolted and stopped the leak. :shruggy:So far so good. :2thumbs:

How did it present?   Did it look like a pan gasket and if so where ?   (front, side etc)

It was down the side but because it was driving around the drips would blow back the side

Most leaks above the pan gasket will run down to the protruding gasket and drip off there, makes it harder to track the source.

The dipstick tube has an inverted bead where the O ring sits, any prying back/forth on the tube can cause the tube to crack at the bead.
