Are they any better than the ones pre installed on a desktop computer?

Better not really. I have a DVD duplicator that is stand alone.
It is much faster to make multiple copies. I can do 10 dvd in 3 min.

What '69 said...I have a Sony DVD recorder/burner. I used it to put all my 8mm moves on DVD, I love it' but after I got done burning it just sits

If you get a stand alone that has a better read/write speed than the one in your computer, yes, it will be better. If it is the same, it will be the same, if it is less, then it will be not as "good" performance wise.

People are going to have to get accustomed to the stand alones. The technology is living on borrowed time.
