where do you go for a reasonably priced street 440

Hi all,

I need a 440 street engine to go in my 68 charger. I also bread a torqueflight too. I'm interested to hear about any experiences and advice you have had purchasing a decent 440 for street use. I'm not in the USA, so I would need to ship it. Hence, a supplier near a big shipping port would be ideal.

What is your budget for a "reasonably priced street 440"? "reasonably priced" will mean different things to different people.

I'd start by talking to your local auto repair shops.  Where are you located?  Maybe you can source one locally?

What myk said.  Just buy a used stock running motor, have it shipped and built locally.  That way you can have a place to go to if it has issues.

Guessing there's not a "local" Mopar shop in Australia...

Your best bet is probably one of the more well known Mopar engine builders like Muscle Motors.

   and the concept of a "local mopar machine shop" just doesn't exist outside the usa   

   here in Australia we have about 20 nation wide (  +a few  small shops without any rep) and they are  all holden or ford specialists if anything

that's why we ask for your opinions on which "mail order " engines are best ,which shops won't rip us off etc

                                 we don't know, and are on the other side of the world

You don't even have to go to Australia, I'm in Canada and live right across the river from the good ol' U S of A and I had to cross that river to find a "local" Mopar machine shop.

Like polywideblock said - we have very few choices here in Australia when it comes to suppliers for Mopar gear, especially crate engines.  I thought I might get a decent used 440 that would suit a rebuild, ship it over here and rebuild it with the help of a local machine shop.  I am a mechanic by trade and, although I drive a desk these days, I am grateful that I have the skills to do something like that.  But what a waste it would be if I get a used motor all the way over here to find major cracks in the block and most of it is unsalvageable.  Plus it might easily cost me more to rebuild one than to get a good street crate engine.

Thanks Troy for your advice on Muscle Motors. You always have the good oil on things like this.  I agree that a reputable organisation is likely to be the lowest risk option and, although it will no doubt cost me a bit more, you do get what you pay for don't you.  To me, so far away from the scene over there, I don't even know who has a reputation.  Thanks to you Troy, now I do have a lead.  I will look into it.
