Speedo Cable/Gear Questions...

On the way home from the shop during my first drive in the car back in July, the speedometer stopped working. I got up under the dash and noticed the plastic housing that hooks to the back of the speedometer was broken and had been taped together (the tape was old, way older to have been added by the two shops that did the work on my car). I don't know why the last shop didn't say anything about it being broken. When they put the cable in, it wad to be bent over an A/C vent hose which probably stressed it too much. Today, I finally got around to replacing the cable. I have a few questions. We hooked the cable up on the tranny end and turned the rear wheels. The cable did not turn. Is the gear for the speedo visible when looking into where the cable hooks into the trans? Can the gear be replaced easily, ie without tearing too much apart? Does it just slide in? The car has an A727 with an open 3.23 rear. What color gear would that be? Any other ideas or help would be appreciated. I hope this is the last thing I need to fix...

Thanks...

Al

The trans end of the cable housing threads onto an adapter that can be installed in one of three positions, if the adapter is installed in the wrong position the pinion gear won't contact the internal drive gear. Although there is a possibility that the pinion gear is missing, this usually results in a noticeable leak at the cable connection.

Along with the gear ratio, the tire diameter is needed to compute the correct pinion.

I am running P255/70R/15. I'll have to measure the diameter...

3.23 gear with 26" tire should be a yellow 33 tooth gear if the chart I found is correct...

That tire should be slightly over 29" in diameter and would need a 29-tooth pinion, color black P/N 52068151

I have a few of those if you need one at a fair price.

are you sure the square tip of the cable in inserted into the square hole in the gear? I have seen some people install the cable wrong and the cable was off to the side of the hole in the gear

I was wrong. They are P255 60R 15, not 70R. They are 26 inch diameter. So it still should be a 33 tooth gear...

No, those should be more like 27"...how did you measure?

A 27" tire with 3.23 gears needs a 31-tooth pinion....color GREEN P/N 52068153.

I've got the following sizes for the tires.
295/50/15 with 3.55 gears

Given this, I calculated I'll need a 2538936 (Red). Is this correct?

Additionally, my speedometer bounces back and forth all the time. I suspect I will need to replace the cable itself. I do not have cruise control. The source I have found to buy them from is RockAuto.com. It looks like I'd need to buy the "PIONEER CA3014" as it is the only option w/out cruise control. Does that sound accurate to you guys?

I would wonder whether an orange (35 tooth) would be better.  I thought the 295/50 are 26.6 inches in diameter.  See what others say.  I am sorry, but I cannot confirm the speedo cable.

I for the life of me can't remember the vendor I bought it from but I got a cable at Carlisle last summer. I'll look around on the net to see if I can jog my memory of who I got it from...

The correct pinion is the ORANGE 35-tooth current P/N 52068157.

The 80" cable supplied from multiple sources is too long for most models so you have to do some creative routing, the 63" is closer to stock but the lower "cruise control" cable has the wrong fitting at the upper end.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep doing some research.
