A death at work today...... **EDITED**

TruckDriver

I'm posting this just to help my mind, so forgive me. One of the dump drivers from another company we were working with for the past week got killed today about 11:30am where we were dumping our gravel at the power plant. I would of been right there but the first load, one of our other company truck lost his brake lights. So I followed him back to the shop so no one would rear end him. Thus, I lost my original spot. My friend Keith, the driver I was following there in the morning, saw it happen. I guess, the truck in front of him dumped, but forgot to open his tailgate, so all the weight of the load was up tight against the tailgate. So the driver got out to see if he could pop the tailgate open. When he got to the back of the truck, he got between the rear wheels/axles of the truck to see if he could get it open (all the mechanisms are under the box). He did, the tailgate came unstuck and opened. When the load came out, the force pushed the truck forward right over the top of him, crushing him between the rear wheels on the back of the truck. It was soft ground, but he appartently didn't pull the parking brake either. It was a quick death I guess. He had about 22 ton of gravel on. It just bugs me a bit cause you work with someone, then there gone. It is the second guy I worked with in the past 3 years that got killed on the job, and I saw the last one happen. Guess that is why it bothers me. Sorry if this seems like a rant, but I needed to vent it.

I EDITED this as after I made the initial post, I got a call from another co worker, who told me again what happened. When my friend Keith told me, it was over the CB radios and his was having issues. I did miss-understand him. Hence, the red part is what was edited.

Piggy, I did not know him, but I did work with him all week and saw him all the time.

There is nothing more unfair than a person dying at work -- a horrible tragedy.  Be careful and be quick.  Kim

I am very sorry to hear about your co worker. I know how quick the wrong decision can change your life or end it. I do not mean that he did anything wrong other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time and we have all been there. Just not to that outcome thank god. again sorry to hear about your coworker my best to his family.

thats tragic  for his wife/ girl friend /family  ,to see him go to work but not return, here one minute gone the next, life can be cruel at times. (not suggesting this for one minute) but it is easy to get complacent about safety at work if you do the same job day in day out, and if you are rushing to meet a dead line or something, it only takes a second to forget when something goes wrong  with the job, and then bam game over. stay safe.

Sorry to hear that Pete, things like that just suck. The only good thing from something like this is that hopefully others learned from it & there aren't any repeats.

I hope he had good insurance, for his family's sake. :-\

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

This reminds me of my Dad.  He was an over the road trucker.  He left on Friday and we received a call late Saturday night that they had found him in his truck in a rest area.  He suffered a major heart attack and was able to get off the road road and get his truck parked before he passed away.  I was 22 at the time and it stunned me.  We were close.  The shock of saying goodbye to him and then not having him return left a major void and it took me a real long time to come to grips and get some closure.  My heart really goes out to this mans family cause this is real hard to deal with.  Sorry to hear about it.

You just never know when or how it will happen. Say what you need to say and do what you need to do now.

Geez, very sorry to hear that.  :-\

I guess when your number is up, it's up. You never know when things like this can happen...and in a blink of an eye at that.

Sorry to hear that man. I never understood the brotherhood that truck drivers have until I got behind the wheel myself. Even though I didnt know him and I'm far away, I feel it to.

Sad news.  If you hear anything about his family or family needs, please let us know.  I think a few of us would be willing to pitch in a bit.
