I am wondering if anyone here knows a website where I can order a front frame rail for a 1972 charger, I see tons and tons of rails for second gen chargers, but none for third gens, any help is very greatly appreciated!

sardillim

if amd doesn't make it it likely doesn't exist in the aftermarket.    I would compare a 2ND gen rail and see how close it is, it may get you by.   Other option is used,  try desert valley auto parts

Good Luck

Mike DC

Yeah it's not likely to exist if AMD doesn't make it.  A place like Desert Valley might sell you a used one from the dry states for several hundred bucks.

Try posting this in the parts wanted section. I'm sure there's some guys parting out cars.
Wait a minute. I parted out a 72 a few years ago. The frame from the firewall back was toast. May still have the fronts, can't remember to be honest. Send me a PM of what side you need.

How is it as far as quality? Is it worth it to get the autorust piece or try and find a frame rail from another car?

hemi-hampton

In my opinion I'd try to find a good solid used one. BUT, All depends on what your looking for or expecting? LEON.

moparnole

I really just want a solid fix that will be there for a while, the charger is my daily driver, so whatever fix I do I would like it to be a very solid fix

hemi-hampton

If it's a daily driver & no show car then go the Autorust Tech way. LEON.

How thick is that metal, does not look very thick, but it is hard to tell from the camera angle.

71charger_fan

I don't know how thick it is, but it will have to be better than 40-plus years of rust. I just order the parts, but it seemed pretty hefty to me. I'm sure the vendor can answer your specifications questions.

Mike DC

The original rails aren't very thick from the factory.  They are a notch thicker than the floors & body panels but not near double the panel thickness.  Most of the strength of the rails is rooted in the rectangular shape.

moparnole,
I am sending you a link from Autobody Specialties that shows full front rails for a '71-'72 Charger. http://www.autobodyspecialt.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&category=6048. I hope this helps.

Here's the Autorust Technicians piece following installation and paint.

hemi-hampton

Took a year & 1/2 to get them on? Are you happy with them? LEON.

71charger_fan

I only had the passenger side done and the installation was done over a year ago. But, the project kept getting back-burnered. However, I'm very satisfied with the piece.

hemi-hampton

Was the piece thick enough steel. The one time I had them they seemed pretty thick gauge but that was many years ago. LEON.

The hot rod shop that installed it for me felt it was a high-quality piece and the body shop that did the paint was impressed by it. I don't know what gauge it was. I'm sure Autorust either has the info on its website or can tell you.
