Bad Moog ball Joint

Two years ago (4-5000 miles) Put new ball joints and bushing in '70.  Today I took it in to get wheels aligned and new front tires.  After driving it on the rack I walked down the street to get breakfast. Shortly I got a call saying that they could not align it because the right lower joint was worn. The mechanic had aligned it after I did the front end before and he remember that. I had him put the tires on and when I returned to the shop he showed me the slop.

The front tires had been wearing fast and the car did not drive as well as it had right after the front end work.

I always have trusted Moog. I had the receipt and the parts store honored the warranty with a new one.

I hope this is an isolated case.

Ouch, I've been hearing a lot about the decline of Moog quality over the years and am still hoping it's all exaggerated.  Makes me nervous though, I'm ging to need new uppers and lowers as well.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I've seen at least a couple of threads about bad moog ball joints this year.

Let's skip two pages of yakking and cut to the chase - Who makes balljoints that still DO work?

HPP

Afco, QA1, and Howe all offer rebuildable units.  However, they do not offer a bolt in unit for the lower joint, only the upper, unless you convert your lower control arms to late B control arms and use a screw in style.

That's what concerns me.

The upper BJs are just the actual joints, and they are used by enough performance people that they will be around for a while.

But the lower BJs are unusual enough to stop being made by the streetable/performance companies.  That leaves us with only stock/resto applications.  And once that happens, pretty soon things are only being made to look good.

I don't normally stock parts like that , but maybe I will keep an eye out for Federal or Spicer lowers for a decent price . I can put them in with the .22 ammo and MRE's I have been hording.

I replaced Rt lower (MOOG) ball joint last month, only 8000 miles.

Moogs crapped out for me as well on the the lowers. Using Proforged now and so far have been good.  :2thumbs:
