Anything wrong with these repro gas tanks from Vans?

The price is better than the Spectra tanks, by quite a bit.  Has anyone installed one of these before?  I'm on a budget and I really could not care less what the original finish is.  I only drive it, never show it.

Oh and for all those that have replaced a tank, did you use rubber or felt strips between tank and straps to prevent squeaking?

That's exactly it though, what's so real about it and why is it worth the extra cost?  I agree that $52 is not much to get primo quality, but if there's nothing wrong with the cheaper one then it's just money wasted.  The car will cost plenty again this year and I can,t be throwing money away.  If the cheaper one doesn't fit properly or the finish doesn't hold up then sure, no contest.

I have the cheaper one.....roughly 20k miles later no issues.....

Vans also sell the Charger tanks in Stainless Steel...a much better product in terms of longevity/corrosion control esp with today's gas "quality"

I've got to admit Van's offerings have all been great quality, at lower price than others.  :2thumbs:

I've been happy with Van's as well so far.  I do like the stainless but it has no place on my car.  It's a dirty driver!

Alright I'll grab this one, a new filler neck grommet and while I'm at it I'll get a set of xhd leafs.   :2thumbs:

Are you sure the cheaper one isn't a Spectra tank? It has the same manufacturer's part number as the Spectra tank.  :scratchchin:

Ya know when I got a new windshield gasket for my 70 Van's was less than everyone. Bill highly recommended specific glass and gasket for best fitment/quality/sealing and it was the gasket Vans sent me. (1/2 the cost of others pricing.)  :2thumbs:
  Let us know!

Dino

Will do!

E5, the part number seems the same on all these tanks so who really knows?  I am a bit surprised that several companies make the same tank.  I'm assuming the packaging will tell me more when it arrives.

I'll keep you guys posted.

I'll be replacing my lines when I do the tank, how about you? I've got a new calibrated fuel pickup from Kramer waiting.  :scratchchin:

Dino

All I need is a new tank; I replaced my old fuel line for the bigger one with return and added a vapor separator.  The tank had a big dent but was functional so I saved the money to do other upgrades.  Since storing it last winter it has been leaking fuel, but only when you fill it up completely.  3/4 or less and it wouldn't leak so I thought it had to be the sending unit seal or something.  Turns out there was a pinhole under one of the straps and somewhere down the line the strap was covered in what looks like rtv to stop the leak.  Apparently the hole is so small that it required the weight of a full tank to actually leak.  Can't have that so tank has to go.  Once the new one is in I guess I'll have replaced the whole system!  I bought one of those linear sending units, removed the resistor box and welded the one from my old sender in place.  Works like a charm.  I fill it up with about 18 gallons when the needle hits E and filling it with 10 gallons pushes it just past half.   :2thumbs:

I am also looking for a gas tank.  Want an OE tank.  AMD has them for $180.  Is Van's what you all recommend?   Is there a website or how would i find them?

any help on best option is much appreciated.  On somewhat of a budget, but want this car to go back to factory original specs.

thanks!

Just type Charger gas tank in.... or go to their menu and find it that way. Wish they showed better pics of their tanks though. They show them before the holes cut out for sender and don't show vent tubes etc. They call the emission tank a 4 vent, but don't say if their no emission tank is a 2 vent but would suspect it is.

It also includes the sender seal and lock ring.  I recently emailed them and asked.

I have a stainless tank from Vans but I haven't installed it yet.  I didn't get the stainless for looks but for corrosion protection.  :yesnod:     If you don't want it shiny then just paint the stainless.   :Twocents:   :shruggy:

I bought a stainless tank from Van's on E Bay for my 69. I also used stainless straps that I already had. Everything fit nicely and it looks great! Might want to deburr the seams cause it will slice you up. Again, it really looks nice.

forsy1979

Great!  Thanks all for the help.  will go this route for my tank!
