Power steering filters and maintenance?

Service/maintenance of power steering seems overlooked to me? (Until something goes wrong. )  I've ordered a filter to try and will be attempting a flush with fresh fluid soon. When I did my brake overhaul and swap to front disk it started me thinking. I've had the car twenty years now and replaced the steering gear box right after buying the car, about a year later I replaced the pump. Possibly 6-7 years ago I drained the pump and added fluid but not done anything else. (Everything is working fine.)
Am I nuts? (We change all kinds of fluids everywhere else and these parts are pretty costly.) Anyway if you have any tips on a safe way to flush the system before adding the a filter I'd appreciate it. What's "The best" fluid to use?  :scratchchin:
Here is the filter I ordered:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnefine-3-8-Inline-Magnetic-Power-Steering-Filter-/151376046211?hash=item233eb72883&vxp=mtr

power steering filters are common on Fords....I thought about one for my cars as well....but they don't make one for a 5/8" return line
