So i got her started it was awesome but for some reason thought it would be cool to leave her in the garage after putting atf in each cylinder. Had to wait like an hour after to be able to breath lol. Only ran for like a minute out of an ice cream bucket due to not knowing exactly how the tank stands. In that minute it sucked up the whole bucket and started flooding out. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with carbs so what can he the cause of this? Stuck needle? bad float? what are the best ways to figure it out. I want to get it running and driving before i start throwing a new carb and intake on. Which brings me to what would you all recommend? Its got a 360 in it now and i just want to do the carb and intake for now. I've heard good things about the Edelbrock stuff but want the experts opinions. Thanks guys.

Check float level first.  Excessive fuel pressure can cause that but I think yours is related to floats.  I prefer edlebrock carbs and some here prefer Holley's.  Pick an adequate cfm for your combo.

ya i was leaning towards float since it ran for a bit and if i did a little higher rpm it wasn't as bad.

Def Idlebrock dual plane manifold and perhaps a Holley 750cfm double pumper.

Headers can't hurt either.

What carb is on it now? Best guess is its stuck up in there with varnish. Did the old gas smell sweet? Im assuming it hasn't ran for a while? Keep the run time at a minimum until you change the oil or you will toast it. Personally I would recommend a 600cfm Holley for a stock SB.

i have a 600 cfm eddy on my stock 440, runs great, does ping a little in higher rpms but i was told i just need to get bigger jets

600 for a stock 440 is great...

Which is why I'll be rebuilding mine this winter to install when the near stock cam goes in.   :yesnod:

Second that statement :2thumbs:

2 Barrel Carb on it now ?
or,
is it a factory "4 Barrel" Engine ?

There can be very limited improvements gained, swapping to a 4 Barrel Intake and Carb on a factory 2 barrel Engine, if it is currently a 2 barrel type CAMSHAFT internal of the Engine.
Different CAMSHAFTS between factory 2 Barrel and 4 Barrel Engines, just putting the 4 barrel over the 2 barrel CAM in the Engine does little, if anything.

Think as the camshaft as the "program" in the computer.... bigger and higher capacity ANYTHING.... does nothing unless the "program" itself is changed to accept the extra air & fuel.

^ agreed, and an excellent point. If it is a 2bbl carb now I would prob just rebuild it. I dont think I could bring myself to install a new 2bbl carb and manifold. You could I suppose put a new 4bbl intake with a conversion plate... :scratchchin: but You'd still need to remove it when you did the cam...so... Save you pennies and do the carb, intake, and cam all at once. Pretty sure Edelbrock has that in a kit form.
