How was the 1970 glovebox latch screwed on

Did the u-latch that the lock latches on have sheet metal screws or bolts?  I saw a pic with sheet metal screws through it but didn't see any clips under the latch for the screws to go in. Looked like it was right against the dash frame. I can't remember how mine is supposed to go and don't have anything go by.

Yes, it had sheet metal screws. Those then screwed through the dash frame and into a small thin-gauge sheet metal backing plat type deal, kinda like those flat blind nut type deals.
