I'm starting to question my memory on this ....Maybe they changed to silver (instead of black) in the early 80's.  Black came later. Does anyone else remember?

Here's a real one...

"MoPar Line" was the over the counter  replacement for the factory installed unit.

Think about it: Why would a factory assembled filter have the assembly instructions printed on it??

Saw a recent ad for Herb's Parts, correct licensed MOPAR oil filters are coming soon. Looks like both the red/white/blue oil filters and the white/blue hi-perf filters will be available to choose from. 

This is good news to some. These things have been disco'd for quite some time. 

What would be even better is to see a "repro" of both the green and red/white/blue filters, but just a slip on cover design so that you could run just about any filter you want, and slip the repro "slider" over the aftermarket filter

I wonder if you could do that with some vinyl cling wrap?  Or some paint and a stencil?

That would be great, then you could keep using the cover over and over again. I'd buy them for my cars and keep using the WiX filters.

Both the same.  Dealer and "production" - assembled to the engine prior to being shipped to the assembly plant.
The engines come in with the filters to the plant.   

Keep in mind that all the durability testing at Chelsea is done with MoPar filters, including the air cleaners. 
I run no other 'brand' than MoPar in my own cars.

Just a quick update, I received the latest copy of MCG where they feature these filters in the Pentastar News section. They show cutaway photos of the new filters and describe their construction. Interestingly, the Hi-Perf filters have a different design than the standard ones. Both have a spiral wound core.
The standard Mopar one then has a pleated fiber filter.
The Hi-Perf filter has the same pleated fiber filter, but it is interpleated with a metal wire cloth for "additional strength". The wire cloth supposedly aids in trapping more contaminants.

From the photos I still can't tell if the letter "M" is stamped on the top or not. The tops are smooth/rounded, not ribbed.

Bill, the design of Hi-perf Mopar with the wire mesh pleats looks a lot like the Premium Purolator Synthetic oil filter.   We now have the ability to use a premium filter, and still keep the mopar logo.  Great product.

A while back I was approached via pm here by a member who was planning to screen print (?) some original appearing oil filters using an existing modern filter. Wix IIRC. He might have something to do with this but apparently I deleted his message.
