I need to remove my balancer to install a new timing cover seal. I'm going to remove the radiator and condenser to access it from the front. When I'm removing the balancer using the removal tool how do I keep the crank from turning. Btw my eng/trans is a 383/727.

you can put a long screwdriver in the middle of the puller tool, which is just a steering wheel puller, or, use an impact gun.

Hi,

I just replaced the chain cover seal on my 71 383 this past spring.  As A383Wing said a steering wheel puller does the job, but first you have to get the big bolt out of the center. An impact gun with a 1-1/4" socket helps. I didn't have one so I made up a plate that bolted to the balancer and extended to the K frame to keep the balancer from turning. A 1/2" breaker bar and a piece of pipe got the bolt out. Then I used the same plate to get the bolt back in when the job was done. My local NAPA store loans tools so I got a balancer installation tool from them. I used two thick aluminum plates in a circular shape I made up with a big bolt and nut to press the new seal into the cover.

I would recommend using the installer tool to put the balancer back on, you take a chance of stripping the threads out of the crank if you use the original bolt.

or, remove tranny converter cover, fit a socket in one of the flexplate bolts, turn the crank untill this gets blocked and done
