Hi all. Does anyone have a pic of a properly installed trunk seal?? Apparently mine was not installed correctly/for longevity. Thanks

Good morning,

I replaced mine on my 69 so here's the short (long winded) story.

The trunk gasket goes on top of the lip around the trunk opening
not in the channel. The junction where the two ends of the gasket
meet should be dead center over the license plate or other
center point reference. I used 3M yellow snot adhesive. Start
with one end positioned as mentioned and work your way around
applying only several inches of adhesive at a time. DO NOT stretch
the gasket as you apply it......very bad juju if you do that.
I bought a dozen small spring clamps at harbor freight.
I used these every foot or so on the straight runs and
three clamps on the curves to keep the gasket
exactly in place. When I got back to the starting point
I cut the gasket slightly proud of where it meets it's other
end. Then I dabbed a little 3M black snot adhesive to glue
the ends of the gasket together. This turned better than
the factory job.  :Twocents:

The explanation is right on from twodko.
Here is my 73 and my 67 is the same so I would assume they all go in the same place, on the edge - glued.

I have a 69 ,it doesn't point up ...does it?? Seems like that would be a lot for the lid to "squish".

I used the black adhesive all around so if a little oozed out, it wouldn't be as noticeable.....and the factory used black.

Also, for '68, the seam where the ends meet should be off to the right several inches, not centered.  Just thought you might want to know how the factory did it.

Ghoste

I used a black 3M one and placed it that same way when I redid the one on the 67.

Dino

The factory indeed had the split off enter, but it doesn't have any real purpose.  As long as you glue the butt ends together you can have the split wherever you want.

Yep, that's true. I'd forgotten about that......my bad but what Dino said too.

The factory used yellow adhesive. Black is often used during replacement for a neater appearance, but for a factory appearance use the yellow & apply it sloppy.
The seam was off center likely not on purpose, but again assembly line sloppiness.

Good to know....I stand corrected.    :yesnod:
