I don't know but may be worth a try

The seller's feedback is atrocious;  I'd at least buy from someone else...

He said that they are illegal where he lives.

keith88

They are illegal in my state to ..but who cares never had any issues .Plus they can be hooked up to play separately from your stock horns.

Illegal schmegal. Seems everthing is illegal in one way or another. Surely you could evade the  highly trained air horn inspector force.

Yeah but we're talking about Australia here.  In the US I'm sure most law enforcement agencies wouldn't care if a classic car had an illegal mod that didn't hurt anyone.  But in Australia,  a country crazy enough to outlaw gun ownership, who knows what else they'd be crazy about enforcing?

Lennard

He is asking if anyone has experience with those electric horns.
He's not asking if he should buy air horns OR electronic horns.

yes your right and your wrong they only outlawed semi auto guns  but we still have lever action pump action bolt action guns i myself have a license for semi auto guns they just got rid of the cowboy week enders that went around shootin up beer cans no one was happy but only the die hard hunters now own guns none of this guns sitting in a corner of a shed stuff all guns must be put in a safe which in turn prevents guns getting into the wrong hands which is a good thing.we went out yesterday our water fowl (duck) season opening we all bagged out but what a sweet sound hearing the 12ga again only 2 sweet sounds in this world 12 ga and a big block mopar.as for the horns  yes they are illegal connected to the main horn only but you can have them separate because being left hand drive I'm not quite sure what kind or reception I'm going to get from the inspectors when i go for my 1st reg clearance so i'd rather have it hidden and out of site for the clearance and for future road side checks & yes just wanted to know how loud or good they are thanks all

I had an electric horn 25 years ago that could play lots of different songs. It didn't sound near as "authentic" as a real set of air horns.
Maybe you could fab up a set that you could put in/ take out easily.

I put a train horn on my truck, doubt its legal but go ahead give me a ticket for being safe, you can't hear a wimpy tuna horn over a turned up radio with the windows up, there's a reason semis have them and with a 40ft trailer and a dually its damn near a semi, safety is number 1 priority! Electric or air, a loud horn and good brakes are important on any vehicle :Twocents: I just like air more because they won't burn out like an electric horn

true that...

Anyways....
I doubt the air horn law is really about dixie horns.
Probably more about people hooking up horns on their cars that belong on ocean-liners. Giving people heart attacks at lights.   :scratchchin:  :icon_smile_big:

But Lennard is correct....the OP was looking for different info

I did the same thing in my dually. LOVE my train horn! LOVE my Dixie air horn too.

To the OP, it's worth a shot. I've heard some of the electric horns and some of them are pretty good. Give it a go.

the law and Dixie horns:

A car horn is meant for panic-blasting some other dumbass when he starts doing a no-look lane change and is about to hit you.  A Dixie horn is not great for this.  You push the button, there's a slight pause before it even starts at all, and then the first couple notes are only quick short ones.

Many states don't accept a Dixie horn as a viable stock horn because it doesn't do that job very well.  The cops aren't going to arrest you for having one.  But they will fail the car's safety inspection if they tap on the steering wheel and they don't hear a stock horn.

Get the car inspected with the stock horn hooked up.  Problem solved.
Or better yet, wire both (stock and Dixie) horns on the car at the same time with a toggle switch to flip between them.
Or best of all, have the Dixie horn on a separate button.  When that dumbass starts doing his no-look lane change you will be able to wake him up with the stock horn on the steering wheel.

gday mike not real worried about warning anyone as i will have the original horn installed as a primary.i have some  original steel dixie horns not the plastic crap they sell these days but what has appealed to me is the size of this unit as it could be put any were without being detected whether its the  cops or at a car show as my car is being done to a factory finish the only reason I'll put this on is for my kids as they love the dukes of hazzard and its mostly for them to blast away  :woohoo:

You can generally get away with having air horns here in Oz. The only thing is you still need to have a normal style horn, to be able to pass the roadworthy and RTA inspections.
I have air horns on my fourby, and sever of my mates have them on their cars as well, and have never been in trouble or had issues with roadworthy checks or rego. They have the stock (or similar) horn set up as normal, and then either a separate button for the air horn, or a switch that swaps the horn button from working one to the other.

As far as the police are concerned, this is really one of those things that you'll only get in trouble for if you're driving around leaning on the horn, or if you give them attitude when they've pulled you over for something else, and they decide to just find whatever they can to ruin your day because you got smart with them.
Obviously they CAN fine you, or give you a Canary because it's not a legal modification, but usually they overlook this kind of thing.
