My 489 center unit is 323 and open. Wanting to swap in 489 410 sure grip center unit. Other than unbolting the axles, sliding them out and swapping the center units and bolting everything back together...anything else needed to do this swap?

Thanks
Doug

Check bearings for wear. Maybe new seals. Always re adjust axle end play. No its not as simple as just swapping out chunks and simply bolting back together.

I would put the updated axle bearings in it if they aren't there. Make sure it's the same size yoke, they have different size u-joints

Make sure tgat 'posi' has the thrust buttons still in it.

I am going to give this a shot. Will be a couple weeks before I go forward. My car has a lot of punch to it with the 3.23 and the new 440. I am excited to see what the 4.10 SURE GRIP will add. I found this link below which has some pretty detailed info about doing this.

@cooter: I am going to check the center unit for the thrust button today. Thanks for the tip on that.....

It can be very easy as you say if your rears, the axles and housing are in good condition.   would i take a 40 yr old rear and take it apart forthe first time and through in a new centersection no.  But thier is a nice level of easyness to this .  if all parts check out , then bolt bakc on test and go

I am finally getting ready to do this swap in my car. Had some other projects going and put this on the back burner. My 4.10 Sure grip that I am swapping in has the thrust button still in it. Both are 489 center units. My brother in law is going to come up in a couple weeks to give me a hand doing this.

Also, I have read in a couple places that I need to add a "special additive oil" when I install my sure grip. Can I get this from summit racing? If so, anyone got a brand and/or part number? Also, what type of gear oil is good for the rear?

Thanks

Do you mean Green bearings? I'd hardly call the an "upgrade".

When changing 3rd members with the original (superior) axle bearings you need to check/adjust the axle end play.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Im keeping the bearings as they are they are good. I will check the axle end play, in the link that i posted from moparforums.com i saw where it said "Now in reading those it also says if I have understood correct that the drivers side axle should end up with 0 play and the passenger side with the adjustor should end up with .013-.023"

Is this correct?

Both axles butt up against a central thrust block that floats back an forth so the end play on one side should be the same as the end play on the other side.

Check the end play on the side that has the adjuster (right side)....smack the end of the axle shaft with a mallet or shot-filled hammer then check the end play, after each adjustment turn the axle a full turn and smack it again until the desired end play is achieved. I would shoot for .008'-.012" and play.

Will do. Thanks for the insight. I am going to do it the weekend of August 9th, thats when I will have time again to get it done. I will post a video and pics of the results.

Thanks again for the insight!
