Splitting Rims to change backspace

I have two 14x7 painted magnum 500 wheels.  I would like to increase the backspacing so that the wheels are closer to the fender so that the wheels fill the wheel wells better.   I have heard of splitting steel rims to increase wheel width, but can this be done to increase backspace and maybe increase to 8" wide as well??

You can have your centres cut out and put back into a new rim,
with the desired back spacing
The easy way out is buy new repro wheels

I live in Canada where everything is double the price in the US.  I just priced two Magnum 500 (painted version) with the correct backspace and width------- I would be over the $700 mark before I even got them home---thats for two!!!!!!!!   I believe I can get them split for much cheaper....
