Emissions Test Failed: P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error

I went for an emissions test and my 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport 3.3L FWD (Gas - Non Flex) Failed the Test. 

There is NO "check engine light"

The Van has 189,400km.   I just bought a an ECM/ECU/PCM from a local wreckers for $100.   I just swapped it out.   I hope I can pass my emissions test now.

looking at the sheet, I say battery was disconnected or you lost power to ECM for a moment...I doubt replacing the ECM is gonna fix yer problem

You "just" swapped it?  In that case drive your car around until the PCM is "ready" to be tested.  Curious-they shouldn't have failed you, just told you that the car wasn't ready to be tested yet...

Just went thru the whole process myself. Had my current Caravan work vehicle die on me. Pulled another out of stock that had been sitting since last August. Of coarse the battery was dead. Charged the battery, and off for the first inspection----Fail. It took quite a few miles and approximately two weeks before it would read, oh yeah, it finally passed on the third test.

The irony here is.....If I lived about 2 miles further north, the emission test crap, does not apply :RantExplode:


Side note, if there is a check engine light on, it's not going to pass, also, my garage gave me a conditional pass on the second test. Fine if you own the vehicle, and you have untill the next scheduled test to rectify it. You cannot change ownerships on conditional passes, the have to pass, period.

that is considered a "fail"....it either passes, or not..no in-between.

yup....it has to have all the readiness tests read "complete" in order to pass...may take 2 days or a month to complete...depends on the driving and conditions

After the battery disconnect, the car has to go through a drive cycle until all the components are online and ready.    Drive the car normally for a day or two.    Get it warmed up and make a few short trips with the car being shut off and keys removed.   Make a short freeway trip.   Just drive it normally.    I had not seen a procedure before, but one is at the link below.

You got codes. ECM is working. Needs cat converter/s (cat. Inefficiency codes most likely due to age/oil consumption), EGR inefficient flow (possible clogged passages/valve),  EVAP codes are a PITA To diagnose. But most likely purge valve problems...O2 sensors most likely heated portion are bad.

funny..sheet says "MIL commanded on"....yet he says no check engine light is on in dash...bet someone pulled the bulb out

After I completed a repair I reset the computer.  The smog tester then told me to come back when the computer was ready enough; I guess they were being nice to me.  In any case the PCM is stating that the SES light is on so that's an automatic fail...

Thank God we don't have to deal with that emission crap in Indiana.. There would be a lot of people walking....
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Man I am glad we don't have emissions testing here, we actually don't even do yearly saftey inspections anymore either.

My crazy state requires all vehicles to be inspected every year. What I just can't understand is why they require this for Brand New vehicles. You buy a new car from a dealer and you have 7 days to get your emissions tested !?!? That makes no sense to me. I bet its close to zero new cars fail emissions for the first 3 years of their lives.

 If it cranks and rolls down the road your pretty much good to go here. Now having been a police officer I can tell you that obvious things like a roadmap windshied or having lets say no muffler are still PC for a traffic stop and can earn you a mechanical violation ticket. We have vehichle saftey codes but they aren't as strictly enforced as other states.

Worked at dealers in the beginning of my prison time that is working life, and saw many reasons for this...
had an S-10 Sonoma truck back 1993 fall off the railcar. What did the dealer do??
Yep, sent it to the body shop, had it repaired and sold it. We all know bodyshop fix EVERYTHING right??
Only way I knew bout it was I see this black truck in bodyshop with 7 miles on it and remark how some salesman musta wrecked it.

Don't even get me started on the amount of 'junk' high performance vehicles these douchebag salesman take out and beat on then sell em the next week. Plenty can be wrong with a 'new' car once it leaves the factory and idiots get involved. Most today don't even know they are buying that 'program' SRT8 that's been beat to death with 20k on the clock.

    AH  I see you are from Massachusetts,  you have my deepest sympathy,I used to live there  :'(   I am sure the state gets a chunk of the $29. you fork over so they aren't going to give it up.  I am in NC. now and cars are $30. safety only is $13. I think, and our age cars are exempt so you can almost run a stock car on the street here but they get you in other ways.

I'd offer to let ya use my Ethos when stuff gets fixed, that way you know everything is good and all systems are ready before you took it up there. But, you're a little too far away. Did that a lot down in AZ to save friends time and money.

Anyone with an OBD equipped car should have a scanner that can not only read and erase codes but check the readiness monitors also...

The 0455 ---Evap leak--------I had that come up o my 02-------Could not believe what it was, and was way to easy to fix-----I googled the codes, found a utube video of someone smoke testing the system. They made a big deal about not using the test port, just remove the two hose prong from the sensor, located on the drivers side of the rad support and install smoke machine to top hose. This insures you do not send smoke to the engine??? Why, I don't know??? anyways, they go thru the procedure, and show you that the gas cap leaks a bit , then they show the culprit........

The two, one inch pieces of rubber hose that splice the TEST PORT in place.  After viewing the video, I went out to the shop, popped the hood, located little green cap test port , about 6 inches away from the sensor, and when I grabbed a hold of the port assembly it pretty much fell apart in my hand. It's like they found the cheapest rubber compound they could, deep long cracks the length of the hose. Anyways, a couple inches of 3/8 hose and five minutes of your time.

I saw the same videos.   I think I am going to buy a used fog machine from Kijiji - might be faster than making one.   I will also inspect the evap hoses.   Thanks J.Bond
