1970 Plymouth Duster slant 6 had a "supposed" rebuilt lower end. I installed this motor and it runs fantastic! Starts right up idles great, runs great, has compression in all 6 cylinders. You see a little bit of smoke in the morning when car is first started, but after a few seconds it clears right up and no more smoke. But this thing is using a quart or more for every tank of gas! Cannot find any leaks...just seems to disappear! This motor runs so good I hate to have to change it again, but I cannot figure out what to do about the oil! Is it possible that the head is causing this problem...."supposedly" the BOTTOM end was rebuilt, but nothing done on top. I have another motor with a good head...no compression, and burnt rings. Is it stupid or a waste of time to try switching heads? Thanks for any help in figuring this out!

What weight oil are you running?

if it ain't leaking on the ground, then it's burning it...you probably can't see the smoke from tailpipe while driving....

but those are your only 2 options as to why oil is disappearing

Maybe he does   :shruggy:  ...lets ask.   Hey chargers_r_us, is there any pixie dust on you engine?

Have you looked underneath the car for evidence of a leak?  A rear main leak will not necessarily drip on the garage floor, but will leak while the engine is pressurized while driving....

Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah, there are all kind of ferries in Vermont, and perhaps the oil ferry got me on this one! I was wondering what all that dust was under the hood....WOW.....Pixie dust....imagine that....never thought of that as a possible cure! But I probably will check the rear main seal....thanks for that reminder, and for the other guys...Humor makes the heart merry...keep on smiling  :popcrn:

Pull the spark plugs and look at them. If your burning exsessive oil you should see buildup on them.   :2thumbs:

If you are leaking a drop of oil every 1 mile, you will lose 1 quart in 500 miles, well so I have read.

If it is smoking when fired up, bad valve seals.

"supposedly" the top end was rebuilt, but nothing done on top

  :scratchchin: Lost me there

If the bottom end of the other 225 is cooked, normally the top end (Head) will go first. So yes a waste of time.  :icon_smile_wink:

How many miles between quarts? 500 miles my self, just buy more oil.  :shruggy:

Might check the PCV Valve, stuck one can cause oil to be burned.

If it is smoking a little in the morning that means that the oil is going right past the valve stem seals because A) they were never changed when the engine was built as you pretty much indicated, or B) the guides are worn too bad for new seals to do their job. And even though you may not see it smoking after the initial start up, you would probably see it after say running it for an hour then letting it sit for 30 minutes and starting it again. At that point the oil is still warm and would have time to drain down through the guides into the cylinders.   Personal opinion, even if you take the head off the other engine, take the time to actually rebuild the head regardless of which one you use.   :Twocents:

God must love stupid people; He made so many.

I had a slant six that did that, out ran everyone when I put my foot into it, everyone behind me had to pull over or slow down until the smoke screen cleared, about half a pint everytime I planted it

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

NO....the car does not smoke once it is warmed up.... BTW....I corrected my type-o....the BOTTOM end was rebuilt, but nothing done on the top end, so perhaps I should start with the valve seals.....I would have expected to see smoke if the car is "BURNING" all this oil....literally a quart every tank of gas! I did pick up a 198 motor yesterday....It was in a 3 speed standard car, but if I need to, maybe I will use that motor. I can sell the 3 speed standard tranny and bell housing anyway since I got it with the motor. I am not sure how much to ask for it, though!

A383Wing

again, you ain't gonna see the smoke from the tailpipe while driving....bet it only smokes on deceleration..have someone follow you around for a while while driving and look at yer pipe.

The 198 trans and bell housing are worthless....you will probably end up paying someone to take them...the engine ain't much better....if the bottom end of the 225 was rebuilt, and done correctly and complete, just take the head off and have it gone through....then you are done

chargers_r_us

Worthless ...pay someone to haul it away....????   I don't think so

That was uncalled for. Of course it's worth something.......about 9-11 cents per pound.

Good news! I captured 3 of those little oil ferry dudes today, and even found out where they were coming from! I had an old box of lucky charms with some spare parts in them, left in the trunk, and those little oil ferry fellas  :nana:  were hiding out in that box, and getting out and munching :popcrn: my oil when I was not looking! They told me that oil was magically delicious :drool5:! So I neutralized   :eek2::them with special ferry dust :flame:, and wow....what a difference! Its all good, and great to have a little fun in the process  :2thumbs:
