I am contemplating entering the Charger in the super car showdown this year at MATS. The Charger is not a real contender to win anything. It is a street car with some minor tweeking is all.
1972 Charger Topper Special, 360ci, 46RH OD trans, 8 3/4 sure grip with 3.91 gear, 14.93@92 mph.
1973 Charger Rallye, 4 speed, muscle rat. Whatever engine right now?

Doesn't matter brother.  Just you being able to say that you and your machine were there, being part of such a display of power and performance is something that will always allow you to walk with your head held high among most car owners, most of which are of the show and shine with a lawn-chair variety...

Last year the tranny broke doing autocross. Had to ride a trailer back to Phoenix. Makes me hesitant to enter two punishing events. A club member offered me his trailer, I need a brake controller in my truck to use it.

Like the advice u given me through the years Paul i say go for it can't be as bad as me doing auto cross in Vegas (thats the plan anyways ) and plan to knock down all there comes.

Though the broken tranny is scary....

Dave is trailering his Magnum to the show. He suggested that if I break again I can ride his trailer and he will drive the Magnum back to Phoenix. And, Mike also has a trailer I can use to trailer my Charger both ways. That just takes the fun out of the cruise to Vegas. I have options.

The governor broke. Tranny would not shift out of first gear. My tranny guy said it was unusual for the governor to break. Easy fix once the trans was out of the car.

Do you get out of first gear autocrossing?

No. I held the trans to first gear for engine braking.

really?  You dont get out of 1st at all in autocrossing?

Paul G

I ran first gear, never turned more than 4000 rpm. Autocross is a low speed event for the most part.

Especially there! That course is ridiculously tight. Not all autocross courses are like that (certainly not around here) but the emphasis is on driver skill and not outright speed. And safety. They let people on the course with "stock" 40 year old cars and no driver training.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I ran the course in first gear, like I said. Didn't even try leaving it in drive. I just assumed the tranny would just keep shifting in and out, second gear back to first.

A retaining clip broke allowing the governor weights to swing out and destroy themselves.

I registered today in the "street class", drag racing. MATS website lists the autocross at a reduced rate, only if you you are already registered in another class and you can sign up for it at the event. If all goes well I can do both.

BTW, I am going to trailer the Charger. Guaranteed to get home that way.
