Lord Warlock

I can relate somewhat, I foolishly tried to spray a car sitting next to the charger thinking a couple fans would blow the overspray out the garage door before it settled...was wrong.  Getting it off the paint was easy, 1500 wetsanding  took it off the paint, but getting it off the tan vinyl top was a totally new challenge.  In my case I had some things sitting on the roof on top of the vinyl that when removed left outlines from overspray on the vinyl, I first thought it was just dust, but then realized it was overspray.  I used urethane reducer to get overspray off glass windows, and it works great, but when i tried to use it on tan vinyl top, it lifted the color immediately, luckily I stopped before leaving a trashed top...I just had the glass installed again and can't afford to replace the vinyl top again.  I had two types of cleaner to use.  Goo Gone, and Goof Off, designed to take water based house paints off wood trim, Goo Gone did not work,  Goof off helped some taking the top layer of dust/overspray off the surface, and made most of the outlines on the roof disappear.  I would wet the section with goof off, and a small stiff bristle brush to clean shoes or fingernails scrubbed in circles to loosen the overspray.  It seemed to work, but on some areas I noticed there were sections that it didn't take it all off.  So I pulled out a more serious attempt, 00 grit steel wool.  I was very concerned with scratching the vinyl and leaving marks with the steel wool, but it turned out to work better than any of the other attempts.  Spray the goof off spray (or use soapy warm water) and use the steel wool in small sections, maybe 6x6 inch sections at at time, rubbing back and forth from front to back, Don't use pressure, just the weight of your hand and arm is enough.  Then wipe clean with a rag, repeat, then move to the next section.  When done I washed the whole top off, let it dry, then treated it with one of those TV products I'd seen advertised for trim, "wipe new" which actually worked out very nice, better than armor all would have.  When done I could still see where I attempted thinner on the middle of the roof, haven't found a SEM color to fix it yet.  Only a tall person would see the one spot in the center of the roof, so I can work around it for a while.

A word of caution, don't use the goof off spray on the woodgrain dash, it rubbed the darker brown graining off the metal.  In my case I painted the car with no interior in it and the windshield was sitting loosely in position without a gasket so overspray would get into the interior area through one window and the gap around the windshield.  I''m just now trying to fix the plastic gauges using 2000 grit sandpaper and wipe new.

WD 40? I say this because that's what I used to get all of the old VT glue off the roof when I peeled the old vinyl off.
