Hi,

4 Seasons , also know as 4 Siezens for their poor quality reman. compressors. Watch out on chain auto store reman. RV-2's. Murray and a few others are also 4 Seasons under a different name. I don't know where you can get a good quality rebuilt RV-2 these days. The one on my car is a Chrysler rebuild from back in the late 80's. I buy most of my A/C stuff From Arizona Mobile Air these days and they seem to carry quality parts. Try them at ackits.com.

The drive belts on these systems need to be tensioned properly or they will chatter like crazy, check to FSM for details. What refrigerant are you using R-12 or R-134? Also, what oil are you using in the system?

Not having the low pressure cut out switch may get you in trouble.

r12,,,mineral oil,,now giving clicking sounds at idle,,,,,the compressor that is,,,, could loose belts cause this clicking noise???????   runs quieter at higher rpm,,,,,,also out put temp 44 degrees at 85 ambient temp ,,,,,,,is it normal for hi side press guage to bounce arround 5 to 10 lbs?>???        THANKS

Make sure that the cowl door is working correctly, I had a vacuum hose mixed up on the heater box and my compressor kept kicking off and on.

68rtnut,

Great on the R-12 and mineral oil. That's the best way to get maximum performance out of this system. 44 degrees at 85  ambient is a 40 degree reduction and not too bad. If that is at engine idle you are doing well. If that is at 1500 RPM or greater you might do 4 or 5 degrees better depending on air flow through the condenser. Often with the car standing still you get engine warmed air into the condenser.

The clicking noise is hard to tell about without hearing it. It could be the EPR valve shuttling open and closed or who knows what else. RV-2's are not all that quiet but, short of running out of oil they are darned near bullet proof. The gauge fluttering is perfectly normal on less expensive gauge sets that are not damped all that well. You're just seeing the RV-2's pistons and reed valves doing their thing. All-in -all, I'd say things are working as they should.

If you're kind of doubtful about that 4 Seasons rebuilt, you might look around for a junk yard RV-2 that is still in a car with the lines connected and full of oil. That would be a good one to grab and take apart, clean up with a new gasket set, shaft seal and clean oil. Seal up the suction and discharge ports and put it on the shelf for the day the 4 Seasons job gives up.
