How to replace door handle button w/o removing handle?

Just curious if anyone out there has ever replaced a door handle button without replacing the entire handle. My '68 was partially restored when I bought it in '08, and the door handles were new on new paint.  However, they are not the year correct style/color (chrome instead of black).  Just bought two buttons with the hopes I can just replace those without pulling the entire handle.  Have the door panel off.  Need some advice.  Much appreciated! - Jon

You have to disassemble the door handle to change buttons.

Take the door trim off and have a look up at back of handle,
I'm sure the button push mechanism is held on with star or Phillips head once you have lever arms unattached, 1 single screw I think , I remember doing so because button scraped on re chromed handles, left the handle in the door and just removed the buttons , filed up some sharp edges and put the button back,
Anyone got a photo of the back of handle to look at

It can be done with the handle on the door, but with only two nuts holding the handle on it's MUCH easier to just remove the handle. You'll also avoid a chewed up arm.  :brickwall:  Wear a long sleeve shirt.
As fy469rtse stated, remove the trim panel. Reach in & disconnect the latch linkage to the handle. There is one phillips screw holding the small mechanism in on the back of the handle. Remove the screw and the mechanism will come off.
Then, the button should slide out towards the inside of the door.
Install new button, reverse steps & reassemble.
