Will one of those electric fans do the trick?

My car does OK on the highway but more than 45min in stop and go driving and it will overheat, think one of those aux fans mounted to the front side of the radiator would be a good option? seems way cheaper than spending $1000 on a matching radiator/shroud combo

what do ya' think???

Mine used to do the same thing.  I put an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator and it helped but it was not a total cure for the problem.  I saw the most improvement after installing a Milodon high volume water pump and t-stat.  The fan will now cycle on and off when stuck in traffic with the controller set at 190*.

I have one of those aux fans mounted in front of my radiator and I don't think it makes much of a difference if any. It seems that overheating is usually a combination of things.

With the heat at Carlisle this week I was worried since I was driving my 72 Charger down. I don't have a fan shroud and the fan sits 1 1/2" from the radiator. I installed a longer spacer behind the fan so it now sits 7/8" from the radiator. I believe that made a difference.
Have you had the radiator flow tested to make sure there are no restrictions? My original one was operating at only 60 %. Do you have a fan shroud?

Another issue I had with the 72 overheating was the water pump. The pump seemed to work OK but the car would suddenly get hot for no reason. The vanes or fins on the water pump were pretty corroded. I believe that the pitted vanes would sometimes cause cavitation, air bubbles that decreased the efficiency of the cooling system. After replacing the water pump the random overheating stopped.

Thanks for the tips guys.
- Never had radiator flow tested but it was completly recored in 2003, and always used with anti-freeze
- I think I replaced the water pump when I rebuilt the engine but not totally sure.

Sounds like a new Hi volume water pump, thermostat in addition to a fan might be the next thing I try.

Where can you get diffrent sized fan spacers????

I bought an all aluminum tig welded radiator off ebay for like 230 shipped. The thing is a beast, two one inch rows and itlooks really nice too. i was out in the heat all weekendand I never passed 190. I run a high flow pump, high flow 180 stat and no shroud and a old flex fan and some purple ice for good measure.

If you don't have the fan shroud, find one and install it. Once that's in place, go from there.  :Twocents:

I got 3 of those for my big block cars...cured all heating issues I had..I still got an electric fan in the nosecone of the Daytona...but I have never had to use it since the new radiator install

I'm running stock water pump, stock housing, non-thermal fan clutch, and 180* t-stats
