Speedo Gauge Head Repair resources needed

Hi all,

I continue to work out bugs.  My speedometer is doing what I see a number of your speedometers have already done and you have fixed them.  Now I need some help.  My speedometer works 30-60% of the time.  The times it is not working, it reads too high, bounces around, and makes a whining noise.

I have never done this before and cannot find a diagram of the Speedo workings in the FSM.  It probably is there, but I have not found it.  I am assuming this is fixable, but don't know what replacement parts I might need.

Now come the million and one questions:

Is there a thread that deals with Speedometer repairs?  Is there a source of information for doing repairs oneself?  Is there source of replacement speedometers that is good?

Thanks

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

HI,

Don't overlook the speedometer cable as well. A dry (needs lubrication), binding or kinked cable can produce those symptoms as well.

I think there is a new cable on it.  I say I think because the car was just restored and I overheard one of the people doing the work saying he had cleaned and lubed it , but it also has a new transmission (Tremec) and the cable looks new (and come to think of it, I seem to remember the whole connection to the speedo gear in the transmission looked different).  Maybe he lubed up the speedo and that was what he was talking about.   :scratchchin:

I think I have to pull this out to take a look.  Redline is on the opposite side of the country from me, but I will be over there sometime in the next two months, and I cannot drive in the winter, so maybe I can try that then.

It's been  along time since I've done anything with speedometers, but I think I recall a speedometer guy telling me years ago to be careful in lubricating the cables. I think he said too much grease can work its way up into the speedometer head and cause trouble. Maybe someone else knows a little more about that. I think I recall him saying just a very thin coat of Vaseline on the flexible cable was all that is needed. But, again its been many years ago.

I think the cable was replaced, so I think the problem might be in the gauge head.  Maybe I am offbase.  Don't hesitate to  :slap: me if I am being dense about this.

Can someone tell me how a speedometer gauge head works?  I have assumed it has something to do with a spinning magnet and a bunch of springs, but have no clue whatsoever about these things.  Maybe a diagram?
