Strange 6 pack carb problem

My 440-6 has a hemi mechanical fuel pump backed up by an electric pump out back, so, when the bowls are dry, I can fill them up rather than cranking it for 2 minutes. But, when freshly filled, the accelerator pump doesn't want to shoot. If I give a couple shots of starting fluid into etwo barrels, the car will run & then the accelerator pump will start squirting. One would think that it wouldn't make a difference whether the car is running or not & it's got me stumped. If I shut the car off (while warmed up), it'll continue to squirt fine.

I have a feeling that I'll be changing the accelerator pump soon, but has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Maybe the check ball has some varnish or dirt on it and/or its seat.....other than that, I can't explain why it would only work sometimes.

Could Your mechanical pump be having trouble pulling fuel thru the electric pump ? Or is the electric pump running while your mechanical is running.
