is it possible to tell? i just got a 383 4 speed car. and i want to verify it being #'s matching or not., as well as the 4 speed tranny. any ideas? also where to look? the car's build date was april 1968 at the st louis plant. i know that much.. i didn't even see the date on the side of the block, unless i was looking in the wrong place

thanks

Number will be on the bellhousing near the drivers side top. Trans will number will be right behind it on bell housing. May need a flashlight and some rags/degreaser. Will be able to see from engine compartment.

can you be a little more specific? i mean if i crawl into the engien bay and look underneath the firewall at the top of the bellhousing.. the VIN will be stamped there??? i found the engine date code below the driver's side header.. it was 3/11/68. which should be about right for a 4/20/68 build date car.. can i find the VIN on the block or tranny? on a pad? i'm used to 440/727 where it's easy to see on the passenger side
let me know

Typical '68 VIN location, just below the oil pressure transmitter:

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Like I said, just below the oil pressure transmitter behind the intake manifold. The bolt head that is visible in the pic is one of the transmission-to-block bolts.

Right below the sending unit on the back of this block, stamped flat like the picture above.
If there is no numbers it is not an HP block, they were the only ones stamped.
