I am upgrading to a Mini Starter on my charger.....I have a 69 with a 383 with exhaust manifolds.....how are hard and how long should it be from me to install the new starter?

Dino

With manifolds?  Easy.  Just jack it up high enough, place your stands and have fun!  With headers it would be a slightly different story.  If your car still has it, you need to remove the splash shield under the starter to access it.  Don't forget to disconnect the battery before you start and be careful not to score the torsion bar.

With manifolds it should be a pretty easy swap. I'd guess 1-2 hours tops if you know what your doing.

Now if you had headers.... thats another story.

Will the mini starter make a big diiferance than the stock one?

From what I hear they spin a lot faster.  Many people get the mini so they don't have clearance issues when installing headers.  I have headers and a stock starter and as long as it spins it's staying, but I will swap it for a mini when this one goes.  Less weight and more room is always good in my book.

I have the MSD mini starter in my '68 Charger 440. I bought the $250ish one. The more expensive one is clockable, not necessary w/ my headers. It is light-years better than a stock starter. Ridiculously light. Just tiny. One-hand install. Completely rebuildable & easy to service. It sounds like a real racecar when it turns over! Whiiiiirrr, VaRooom! No over-run like the stock starter. Don't think twice. Buy a bitchin' MSD & smile everytime you turn the key!

The mini starter turns the motor a heck of alot faster. I love mine! I had the old starter and that whine was annoying! I'm sure some old school guys will beg to differ though. ;D

Cranks better. I can hot start with over 20* initial timing. Smaller cables if you want to trunk mount the battery. Does touch Hedman headers. Stock does not.

You know you have to remove the tabs on the electrical connections? After you remove these the remaining terminals will sit very close to the block when installed. (1/4")

I installed insulated terminal covers for extra insurance.

These black extensions must be removed. Take the cover off and unbolt the extension ,use the remaining short terminals.

Same starter but rebranded and hedman headders. You can see that I have had to clearance the headers and took of the terminals.

I agree with the above - I had to remove the terminal block off my mini starter too, it was touching the side of the block...

Other than that it was a simple upgrade and well worth it. Mine was fitted to a 383 with stock manifolds
