If I have a 68 Charger that has a fender tag coding of 45 which is F70x15 Red Line tires, what kind of rims are used?  Are they just plain old steel rims?  What where those sporty all chrome 68 only rims called?  They only came in 14 inch didn't they?  And if they used the old steel rims, what hub caps were used?

If it was coded for 15" wheels - the only rims would be the steel "H" wheel.....standard on 68-69 Hemi's and on 69-1/2 A12 cars.

Expect on paying 2k + for a good set with date codes that suit your build date. Any 69 dated that fall into A12 date territory would double that.

If it was coded for the F70-15 tires, it must have been a Hemicar with 15" steel rims. It might have come with the dog-dish hubcaps and the wheels painted body-color or it might have come with black steel rims and full wheelcovers like these in the picture below.

I cant believe they date coded the rims too.

Oh, so that is what the wheel covers look like.  Nice car.  I never saw the chrome strip below the door on a Charger before.

Oh yeah - Mopar dated almost everything.....for vendor/warranty reasons. At least the dates you need will be a lot cheaper than 69 dated wheels.....that is, if you care about having the correct wheels.

The chrome strip below the doors on this 1969 was a wide sill molding and was an option in 1969. Not sure about other years but, probably other years also. It would have been coded as "M25" on the fender tag of cars built in Hamtramck, I am not sure how St. Louis did it.

If it was coded for 15" wheels - the only rims would be the steel "H" wheel.....standard on 68-69 Hemi's and on 69-1/2 A12 cars.

Actually, the H rims were for 1969. 1968 used a different 15" wheel. I can post a picture of them when I get home.

Here's one of mine.....

Remember the 14 inch chrome, what they call them... Magnum 500 wheels?  What size width were the rims and what size red line tires did they put on them?  I have saved a set for the last 35 years, think they are 5 inch, will need to check.

We all call them Magnum 500's but they are really called, "Styled Steel Road Wheels". I have a complete set of 5 with caps & retainers in really nice shape but they aren't wide enough to put the tires I want on them so they just sit.  ::)

Aren't the red line tires F70's?   :shruggy:

Thanks for the pics of the 68 15 inch rims, Mytur.  So the 68 15s don't have the "H" code.  Is the stamped code the same for all the 68 year rims or does it change during the course of the year?  I guess these rims can also be found on old 68 Chryslers Cars.

Mytur Binsdirti

My car was built in June 68 & the 4 rims that came with the car are stamped March 26th, which sounds legit. I was missing one for the spare & I did find one that was the same vintage but it has a 11/67 stamp date on it.

Yes - You are right - I have never had a '68 and assumed incorrectly that the "H" thing started in '68. Your wheels are 100% correct - but you already knew that....
