I have done it without to much problem. It helps if the tank isn't full.

When you're removing the sending unit from the tank you gotta hold your tongue in just the right spot.  :icon_smile_big: IOW, it doesn't pull straight out.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Cool thanks.  I know they snake in requiring about 17 turns to get it right, and didn't want to find out that it would only twist halfway out...

I've done it many times as well.
Just loosen up on the bolts for the gas tank straps. Lower it down as much as you can without completely removing it. Makes the job a little easier.  :yesnod:
Get a sending unit wrench also for the locking ring. It's inexpensive, and makes it even easier to remove/install it.

like others said , can be done , done it  many times   , but tricky if  you have got a none factory type , aftermarket sock filter on the end of the pick up , easy knock it off & drop inside tank !! , & then your end up taking the  tank off  , as i found out with the aftermarket sock / filter :yesnod: :icon_smile_blackeye:
