Magnum 500s or not? Best back spacing for 70 charger...

I've owned my '70 down here in Australia since mid 2007 (longest I've ever owned a car for!).
While I like the rallye wheels well enough I've always wanted to get some Magnum 500s.
Sorta told myself once I sold my '77 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe I'd look into it more seriously.

Anyhow to my question; What do you think the best back spacing would be? Obviously I'd like to go 14s but if Cragar don't have them here I'd settle for 15s.
I know redlines weren't a factory option in 70 but I love em and I'm a bit over BF Goodrich white letters....
Any feedback appreciated

Now here's sum pix  ;)

The obvious answer would be to take the current rims off and measure. But they stick on the hubs and you need a porta-power to remove them!

Centres are a couple mm too small inside - half the reason I would like to change rims.

If I keep the Rallyes I'll have the centres milled out a bit if possible.

There are many backspacing threads on this site, lots of reading on how to do it and what works/looks good. But a common rule of thumb on those wheels is that the stock backspacing is generally an even split, meaning an 8' rim will have 4" of backspacing and a 10" rim will have 5" of backspacing, etc. You can order them differently and in many cases it ends up looking better with minimal backspacing, say 3" on an 8" wheel, assuming you like the outer part of the wheel well filled out more.

thanks tan top

it only comes out once a month or so, so yeah its tempting just o leave well enough alone.  ;)

have to sell off a couple other cars. will give me more time with the charger.  :2thumbs:

thanks bull. yeah I guess I like the reverse rim look mostly. I quite like the look of the rallyes though and they have a fairly shallow dish. pretty sure they are 7" wide. tyres are 215 x 70 x 14

Try putting a little grease around the center locating register on the axle. Might make getting them off easier as they do tend to rust in place. It's supposed to be a snug fit, but once rust forms, it becomes ALOT more than snug.

Had em off once and there wasn't any rust. measured with vierniers and they were 2mm smaller than the hub centres. but yeah youre right. grease would def help.

There are so many nice wheel choices to choose from these days. I like the Rally wheels....I like Mag 500's and put them on my 69. American Racing Torque Thrust II's are great looking wheels as are Vectors if you want a GL look. What ever you do don't by anything From Wheel Vintique, buy from Specialty Wheels. DC.com may still get a group discount.   :Twocents:

yeah ive heard bad things about wheel vintiques.

will go cragar I think. they seem to produce a nice rim and have been for a long time.

That's really odd that the wheels won't clear the hubs.  :scratchchin:
Are they original rallye's, or repops?
Are you running an aftermarket front disc setup, or have aftermarket rear axles?

If you have to crank down to get them to seat, you might be putting unnecessary stress on the wheel studs.

2mm  (about .08in for us) seems like too much interference to me maybe a taper? Something is not right with this.
The bore would not bounce back that much after removal.

Cant beat the Rallye's on a 70 & newer Mopar   That is a bad ass ride & any wheel will compliment it

Did some of the rallye wheel A-body Mopars have smaller hubs maybe? Or are these the original wheels? :shruggy:

Not that it will matter to you but one thing I found out regarding Magnum 500s is that the Ford Magnums, while identical visually, are smaller at the hub. I know this because I snagged a set for my old '70 off a Ford Galaxy and they were reluctant to mount. A few extra blap, blap, blabs from the impact though and they went right on. :2thumbs:

loudmouthaussie

yeah there is the belief that ford and mopar from 70s are the same.

mopar fits on ford but the opposite is usually a lil tight due to larger mopar hubs.

my broadcast sheet says this car came with steel wheels so the rallye wheels are repro i'm guessing.

possibly designed for ford fitment?

colour coded steelies and dog dishes. love that look too  :2thumbs:
