727, offset dowel pins...

Hi all,
I'm doing a complete overhaul of both engine and the 727. The 727 is totally worn out in all bushings and the thrust washer between input and output shafts is in a really bad condition.
I see that offset dowel pins, for accurately lining up the engine with the auto, are available from several wellknown sources.
How can I predict what offset I need, and can I measure it somehow??
Cheers,
Martin

Let me know if you figure it out......I have only seen procedures for manual bell housings. Is it possible to check this with a fully gutted 727 case? Anyone done it?

I have never done it but the surface for the pump should work , you would need a mirror as the gauge swings around though

I have to wait for the new crank and line honing of the mains before I can start looking at the alignment.

Here is video giving an idea about how to do it.

Here is some nice dowels:

I'll try it. I have a 340-6 T/A that eventually eats the pump seal on 727's. I have a feeling someone messed with the main saddles at one time...throwing everything out of whack. Maybe I'll see what's up with a bellhousing on it and go from there. I guess I need to measure up the block etc. to see if anything dumb was done to it.

I have tried different convertors, flex plates and even a different transmission!

I'm refreshing this old thread...I've done the alignment of the crankshaft and the input shaft of the 727. It was a painless process, took some time to fabricate the tool, but now the alignment is nearly perfect. No problems to see the dial indicator w/o a mirror.
Feels good to have that sorted out, I think it will prolong the life of the 727 bearings and bushings, as well as contribute to smooter running. I'm now installing a solid SFI approved, stiff "flex"-plate so I think it's important that the alignment is good.

I'm adding that I bought the .014 offset dowel pins, did some grinding on them but basically that was the correct offset.
